Eliminate the Fear of Failure – Face Adversity and Use it to Your Advantage

As moms, we all want our kids to have supermoms. But let’s face it. It’s really hard to actually be that supermom. And that knowledge creates a fear of failure that we can’t actually attain supermom status. We all have a fear of failing and disappointing our families. Our internal fears combined with daily external adversities are overwhelming. I want to teach you how to use adversity to your advantage and eliminate the paralysis caused by the fear of failure.

The Problem – Adversity and the Fear of Failure

The fear of failure can be overwhelming. No one likes falling on their face and looking stupid in front of their friends and family. Or learning that they aren’t as good at something as they thought they were. Fear of failure can paralyze you and keep you from taking the actions needed to be the supermom you desire to be.

And then there are the external adversities. The challenges we face every single day that throw our schedule into chaos. The problems that arise that weren’t on the to-do list.

Don’t forget the self-imposed circumstances that have us weighted down. When we are constantly drained by the weight of our obligations, it's impossible to be great. The Solution

Change Your Mindset

    • Be more afraid of not taking action, of settling for a life that is below what you or your family deserves.
    • You don’t have to get rid of fear. You just have to acknowledge it and use it as energy to move forward.
    • View fear as a challenge to prove to yourself and your family that great things can happen regardless of fear.
    • Don’t be afraid to fail. View failure as a process of elimination. If you try something and it fails, you just discovered something that doesn’t work. You’re one step closer to what does work. Fail until you succeed.
    • Tony Robbins has a Rocking Chair philosophy. He says when he’s sitting in his rocking chair at 85 years old, he doesn’t want to look back and wonder what could have been or have regret of a life not lived.

Create a Game Plan

    • What’s your goal? Write it down.
    • List the adversities (internal and external) that will try to keep you from attaining this goal.
    • Create a solution for each adversity. So, when it shows its head, you already have the solution in place. For more info on this step, read Avoiding Distractions.
    • Write down the benefit you’ll experience when the goal is met. Tell yourself how you’ll feel once you achieve the goal.

Take Action

    • Train yourself to just do it regardless of fear. You don’t have to be courageous. You just have to do it.
    • If you take action in spite of fear, you will experience freedom and success that most people will never know. You will have overcome the very thing that holds most people back.

Engage Your C.O.R.E.

The Adversity Advantage is a book that changed my life. I’ve read it a number of times and taken extensive notes. It has shaped much of how I live my life. Dr. Paul Stoltz talks about using your C.O.R.E. to convert adversity into energy.
C – Control – Focus on that which you can control or influence. Nothing else is an effective use of time.
O – Ownership – What steps can you take immediately for positive change?
R – Reach – What is the best and worst-case scenario of reaching for your goal? How can you minimize the potential downside? How can you maximize the upside?
E – Endurance – What actions can you take that will get you to your goal as fast as possible? Describe what that would feel like.

The Benefits of Eliminating the Fear of Failure

Don’t despise adversity. It has its benefits. Helen Keller said, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved.

Be the supermom you want to be and your family deserves. Practice the principles found here. The more you do it, the more natural it will become, and the easier it will be. The more you harness adversity by changing your mindset, creating a game plan, and taking action by engaging your C.O.R.E., the stronger you’ll get, the more innovative you’ll become, and the more confidence and momentum you’ll have.
